Tyre tread is important for grip, traction and resistance to aquaplaning. Checking your tyre treads is therefore an essential part of general tyre care and maintenance. You should check your tyre tread at least once a month, as well as before and after long journeys. Common signs of tyre wear include:

A tread that's below the legal minimum tyre tread depth (1.6mm for cars)
Visible tears, cracks or cuts in the sidewall of the tyre.
Stains or discolouration on the tyre.
Unusual bulges, or deformed parts of the sidewall.

Tips to Prolong Tyre Life:

Proper Inflation: Maintaining the correct tyre pressure is paramount to increasing their lifespan. Underinflated tyres cause more friction with the road, leading to excessive wear and tear.
Regular Wheel Alignment: Misaligned wheels can cause uneven wear on your tyres. If your vehicle pulls to one side, your steering wheel is off-center, or you notice uneven tread wear, it's time for a wheel alignment check. Properly aligned wheels reduce tyre stress, promoting even wear and prolonging their lifespan.
Balancing Your Tyres: Unbalanced tyres can lead to uneven wear patterns and vibrations, affecting both tyre life and ride comfort. Balancing your tyres ensures even distribution of weight around the wheel assembly, preventing premature wear.
Rotating Your Tyres: Front and rear tyres wear differently due to varying pressure and steering mechanisms. Regularly rotating your tyres ensures even wear on all four, extending their lifespan.

I have a 2004 SLK 350 R171 which I intended to take to France to rally in September.
